SOIL, SAND, BONE 2023
Dancer and choreographer, Michael J. Love's careful observation and attempts of flight with a kite are edited amidst scenes of hands moving repeatedly through water, soil, still imagery, and dye. Each visual element is inspired by the transformative invention of House and Techno music while employing the historical icon of the praise house, a simple frame structure built for worship.
4:33 minutes
This tradition of building a house for gathering began as a form of spiritual resistance by enslaved Africans before the US Civil War in 1861 and was continued by freedmen after The Emancipation in 1863. In SOIL, SAND, BONE, Black American forms of movement, music, and artistic labor illustrate a forward moving ritual that honors embodied testimonies of cultural histories.
